Private Market Coverage

Are You Eligible for Health Insurance Coverage In The Private Market?

  • Are you on Minnesota Comprehensive Health Association (MCHA) coverage because you were turned down for coverage in the private market by another health insurance company?
  • Has your overall health status improved?
  • Have you filed few or no claims within the past several years?

If you answer “Yes” to these questions, it may be time for you to re-evaluate your health care insurance options.

MCHA encourages you to explore other health care coverage options in the private market.  Although you are on MCHA now, you do not necessarily need to stay on MCHA indefinitely.  You may find that you are now insurable by another insurance company – possibly with lower premium rates – in the private market. Not all insurance companies have the same eligibility criteria, so you may want to consider applying for coverage to more than one company.

There are several ways to explore your options in the private market:

  • Contact a health insurance agent directly to discuss your coverage options.
  • Contact or check the Web sites of several different insurance companies to obtain information on their individual health plan options.  Request an application form for their plans.  Complete and return the application to the company in which you are interested.  You may be required to submit a one-month premium check to be considered for coverage (If you are not accepted for coverage, your check will be returned to you.). Consider applying to more than one insurance company, because not all companies have the same eligibility criteria.  This means that one insurance company may not accept your application, while another company will.
